Come on out for the fun of the Splash Dogs 2010 Annual Awards Dinner! This special event will be held at the Firefly Tapas Kitchen and Bar on Saturday, November 6th at 7pm. The award winning Firefly Tapas Kitchen & Bar will host an exciting evening of great food, good conversation and a look back at an incredible year of accomplishments.

Menu -
Firefly offers family style (all you can eat) dining with a Mediterranean flare. Our menu for the evening will include a sampling of Tapas, a Garden Variety Salad, Steak Frites, Paella, and Herb Roasted Chicken and to close Caramel Flan, Chocolate “Tres Leches” Cake. There will also be a cash bar. Cost – $35 per person, kids (6 yrs – 16 yrs) $15.00.

Dinner tickets will be available for pick up at the Splash Dogs Registration table at Bass Pro Shops from Thursday, November 4th through 1pm Saturday, November 6th. Attendee’s may attend w/out food ticket.

Ramp up for Splash Dogs Bass Pro Event at Sunny Dog Place

With Splash Dogs Bass Pro event right around the corner (September 10 – 12), its important to have you and your dog ready to jump and jump far!!! Join us at Sunny Dog Place, a doggy daycare in Harbor City which hosts a 32 foot pool and dock for your dog’s jumping pleasure! Sunny Dog Place and Splash Dogs are bringing Ursula Kinley down from the Bay Area to do a ramp up event for Splash Dogs Bass Pro competition. Ursula will be at Sunny Dog Place on Wednesday, September 8th.

This a great opportunity to meet and talk to one of the BEST Dock Jumping trainers in the country. Ursula will be working with you on various techniques to get your dog jumping higher and farther!! This will be a great opportunity to get time to troubleshoot your dog’s dock jumping performance or to help start your new jumper off!

Ursula Kinley is an active and top competitor and trainer in the sport of dock jumping. She is the head trainer for Crazy K9’s Dog Training in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she helps her clients understand the benefits that activities such as dog sports, can bring to their canine companions. Ursula’s own dog’s accomplishments are a great example of her work with several championship titles, top of breed and record holders in her household. She has also been seen on the Super Retriever Series and the Incredible Dog Challenge with her dogs. In addition to competing, Ursula is also a published author with articles in local publications in the SF Bay Area such as Bay Woof Times and in international publications such as DogSport magazine. If she is not training or competing with her own dogs, Ursula can usually be found working at one of many Splash Dog events that are held across the United States each year.

There will be two sessions one from 4 – 6 pm and the other 6 – 8 pm. It will be limited to 20 dogs per session. The first 10 people to sign up for each session will only pay $15. “Viva Las Vegas” 2010 National Championship announced!

Splash Dogs is pleased to announce the location of it’s 2010 Splash Dogs National Championships - Las Vegas, NV. That’s right Splash Doggers – Viva Las Vegas!

Mark your calendars! The 2010 Splash Dogs National Championship will be hosted by the Bass Pro Shops of Las Vegas, NV November 4 – 7, 2010. This annual event, which was once known as the Splash Dogs Cynosport World Dock Jumping Championships, will be a four day action packed event which will include several last chance qualifying competitions, a Championship for all Splash Dogs Super Air Divisions ( Splash, Junior, Senior, Pro and Extreme) and Classes of competition (Super Vertical, Lap Dog and Junior Handler) as well as our Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday evening. More details still to come.

2010 National Championships Qualifying

As in previous years, your dog must qualify to attend the Splash Dogs National Championship. There will be several last minute qualifiers running from Thursday through mid day Saturday. The requirements for qualifying are below. Please note that Ultimate Air Dogs and SRS jumps will also count towards qualifying for the Splash Dogs National Championship.

Super Air:
The Junior Handler, Lap Dog and Divisional Championships will run between Saturday and Sunday, November 6 – 7. A team must complete 5 scores in a specific division between November 15th 2009 through November 6th 2010, prior to the commencement of the 2010 Splash Dogs National Championship. Your dog will only qualify in the highest division that you have 5 scores in. If a dog qualifies in 2 different divisions with 2 different handlers, the dog must compete in the higher of the two divisions, but may compete with either “qualified” handler. A dog may not compete with a handler who does not have 5 scores in a division with that dog in the 2010 competition season. There will be several competitions running Thursday thru mid day Saturday for anyone looking to get last minute qualifying score(s).

Super Vertical:
The Super Vertical Championship will take place on Saturday November 6th. A team must have a successful competition “catch” at 6’0″ or higher at a Splash Dogs event between November 15th 2009 through November 5th 2010, prior to the commencement of the 2010 Splash Dogs National Championship. There will be a “last chance” pre-qualifying round on Friday, November 5th.

New Super Vertical Record Set 7’10″!

On Saturday, August 7th, the crowds at the Sonoma County Fair gathered for the final Super Vertical competition of the “Fly in Memory of Primo” Dock Jumping Event. Little did they know that this was going to be a night to go down in the record books.

With competitors such as Qiana and Amy Peterson, Aries and Ally Kinley and of course Cricket and Ray Crane, it was sure to be an event to remember. Pyro, an 11 1/2 month old Dutch Shepard and his handler Ashley Reitfors took to the dock for the first time of the night at 6 feet, from there the sky was the limit. As they reached the 7 foot height, Pyro and Ashley left everyone behind and continued to climb on their own.

One by one the bumpers were knocked from the apparatus, all on the first round, 7’2″ CATCH, 7’4″ CATCH, 7’6″ CATCH, 7’8″ CATCH and 7’10″ CATCH. It was amazing, the Splash Dogs Super Vertical record had been broken after being held for two years by Melissa Ness and Stryker at 7’8″ of Ramona, Ca.

Splash Dogs extends a huge Congratulations to the new Super Vertical Record Holders Pyro and Ashley Reitfors at 7’10″. May you continue to soar through the record books!

Winterscizing your Dog

Dogs, like humans are more inclined to gain weight over the winter months due to inactivity and of course those yummy holiday scraps! With the inactivity and extra yummies can come extra weight and a dog who is stressed mentally as well as physically. When winter hits, along with it come the holidays, shorter days and much cooler temperatures. It is hard to find time for yourself, let alone your beloved pet. Take a different approach to excercising and caring for your dog over the winter and think outside of the box.

Below are some great tips to keep your dog happier and healthier over the winter months.

- teach your dog some new tricks; dogs are very intelligent creatures and love to learn new things, pick up a book on tricks or check out the internet and see how many new tricks you and your dog can master over the winter. This will also help build your dog’s focus on you, as you are building a stronger working relationship with your dog.

- Cut down on your dog’s food intake by 1/4. With less activity your dog may not need the extra calories to fuel themselves. This will help prevent any uneeded weight gain that will eventually have to be taken off in the spring. If you are in a cooler climate your dog may need the extra food to help insulate itself, so it is always best to check with your veterinarian first.

- Set up a mini agility course in your house or garage. Agility equipment is pretty easy to make and you would be surprised what you can come up with around the house. Make a jump or two out of a few chairs and broomsticks, how about makeing a tunnel, same concept as the jumps but place jumps near eachother and drape a blanket over the broomsticks. Be creative.

- Play indoor games with your dog like hide and seek, find the treat, fetch and tug games. Find the treat is similar to the three card monte. Use plastic cups and hide a treat under one and then move the cups around. Then ask the dog to find it, she gets the treat if she’s right and sees where the treat was if she is wrong.

- Do you have a treadmill? Teach your dog to walk and trot on the treadmill. For a more vigorous work out try adding a doggy backpack with some water bottles in there for added weight.

- Condition your dogs core by exploring the world of wobble boards, balls and boxes. Core conditioning plays a big part of your dogs overall conditioning. There are several DVDs as well as articles on core conditioning on the internet, check it out and have a BALL!

- sign up for an indoor dog sport class; there are many indoor dog training facilities that offer classes in pet dog agility,flyball, freestyle, tricks and obedience.

- sign up at a canine swim center for hydrotherapy and water treadmill work.
